Benalla is a small town situated just under 3 hours north of Melbourne that is home to a population of 14,000. A place very similar to my hometown back in South Australia. However, Benalla has more than just the usual church and bakery of rural towns; Benalla is a street art dream. Each year Benalla host their annual Wall To Wall Festival in early April bringing artists to paint murals all over the town. However, when the festival is not on, one can still wander the streets searching for all the past years art work, or take one of their street art walking tours that run all throughout the year.
My friend and I being always on the search for some great street art could not pass up the opportunity to wander to the town and search for it ourselves. On every wall there is something to find, however they have made it easier to locate the art by giving you a directory on their Wall to Wall website, and I have put the location under each image to help you out too. Even the locals were super enthusiastic to tell us about it, and help guide us to where their favourite pieces are.
As much as I’d love to tell you about the township, being a public holiday on the day we visited, majority of shops/restaurants/cafes were closed. Until next time Benalla, we will be back for next year’s actual festival.
